Quick answer: Massachusetts public pension payments arrive by direct deposit on the last business day of each month. Paper checks are mailed about two business days earlier and are payable on the deposit date. The full 2026 schedule is below.

How Massachusetts pension payments work
- Direct deposit is the standard. Your benefit posts to your bank account on the last business day of the month — that payment covers the month just ending, not the month ahead.
- Paper checks are mailed roughly two business days before the deposit date and are payable on the deposit date. If you still receive a paper check, allow for mail time.
- Weekends and holidays shift dates earlier. For example, May 31, 2026 falls on a Sunday, so the May deposit lands Friday, May 29.
New retiree? Your first payment takes longer
Your first benefit payment typically arrives one to two months after your retirement date while the board finalizes your calculation — and it's paid retroactively to your date of retirement. Your official amount is set by the retirement board; our free pension calculator gives you a close estimate ahead of time so you can plan the gap months.
Check your payment details online
MSRB retirees can view gross/net amounts, deductions, and payment history in the state's Retiree PayInfo portal (mass.gov). MTRS retirees can find the same schedule and pay information at mtrs.state.ma.us. If your deposit doesn't arrive on the scheduled date, contact your retirement board: MSRB at 617-367-7770, MTRS at 617-679-6877.
Will your 2026 payments go up?
Yes, if the annual COLA is approved: Massachusetts applies a 3% cost-of-living adjustment to the first $13,000 of your annual benefit (up to $390/year, about $32.50/month), effective with the July payment. See our complete 2026 COLA guide for details.
Plan beyond the pay dates
Knowing when your pension arrives is step one — knowing whether it's enough is the real question. Run your numbers in the Massachusetts pension calculator (or the MTRS teacher calculator), then check what Social Security adds under the Social Security Fairness Act.
